We were contracted to provide TV reception for the staff on the platform before the days of Satellite.
The platform was operating some distance from the land. Reception of the TV programs was achieved by installing a phases array of attenuates of section of the platform that extend right over the sea. It is a little disconcerting when you are working 100m+ above the sea.
The recovery of diamonds from the sea floor was monitored along the entire length of the process by cameras.
The alluvial gravel containing the diamonds is processed in a separation process that finally delivers the diamonds into a secure room where they are sorted and secured. The cameras had to be IP66 rated to withstand the rigours of the constant pitching and rolling of the ship as well as the corrosive effect of the salt water and spray.
Certain control equipment within the nuclear reactor was monitored by special cameras that could withstand the bombardment of sub-atomic particles created
during the nuclear reaction.
At first it was a little unsettlingly when you entered the reactor core in just an overall and paper hat, to check the cameras after the reactors had been running.
This was an interesting project monitoring the flow of slurry through areas of the mine that were not frequented.
The slurry was returned to worked-out areas, deep within the mine. The problem was that the pipes carrying the slurry would partially burst and the slurry would then fill the mine stopes . CCTV cameras monitored the slurry pipes at key points. The cameras were monitored in the control room above ground.
We were involved in the monitoring of the flight of missiles on a test range.
The CCTV Cameras had to be positioned as near as possible to the missile launch area so that the launch could be analysed. The trickiest part of the contact is that were kept in the dark, on a need to know basis, so we were never quite knew if the cameras were set up correctly. This type of project gobbles up time, which you never seem to have allowed enough of.
The project required camera surveillance around the perimeter, this in itself was not difficult.
The interesting aspect of the project was the safety standards that one has to adhere to.
A pre requisite for being considered as a contractor for this project was being ISO9001-2000 accredited.
We are finding more and more that international companies expect ISO9001-2000 certification. There were no hitches with the contract itself or with payment, one just adhered to the clients requirements and it was plain sailing. The client is based in Vienna. |
