Fire Detection

Fire Safety includes both Fire Alarm Detection and Voice Evacuation Systems which provide Fire Protection and falls within our Fire and Safety Division.

Fire and Safety constitutes the major portion of our companies business.

Our experience in Fire Detection goes back to 1989 and Fire Evacuation even further to 1983.

We take the design, installation and servicing of Fire Detection & Fire Evacuation very seriously, as they are crucial in the prevention of loss of life and the protection of property in buildings.

Understandably all security is a grudge spend, until it is needed then it is too late.

Standards
SANS 10139 provides a comprehensive guideline, which will ensure that a building is properly protected.
The South African Consumer Act now places the responsibility on all parties involved in the design, installation and servicing of the systems.

Improvements
A major step forward in the improvement of the reliability of the systems is the use of Fire Resistant Cable rather than Fire Retardant Cable.

The fundamental difference is that:
  • Fire Resistant cable can with stand an open flame for at least 30 minutes.
  • Fire Retardant cable can withstand an open flame for 30 seconds.
  • Fire Retardant cable provides a reasonable level of protection when used for detection, as the fire is detected before the cable is destroyed.
The real problem is when it is used for alerting and evacuation people. If the cable is exposed to an open flame it can be destroyed before the alarm is activated.
The FDIA "Fire Detection Installers Association" has been largely responsible in ensuring that South Africa comes into line with International Practices.

    Fire Alarm Maintenance
A major problem with Fire Detection & Fire Evacuation Systems is that they often not test regularly and maintained properly.

When a fault is detected on the Fire Panel it is simply isolated and forgotten about.
If the systems are being checked in accordance with SAN10139, the fault should be picked up on the next inspection.

Real time web based monitoring system.
The MeyCom Guardian system continually checks the operational status of fire systems.

In order to overcome this problem MeyCom through it's partner company RedZebra Global has developed a real time web based monitoring system.
The system continually checks the operational status of fire system. As soon as a fault occurs the fault is reported to the responsible persons via email and SMS if required.
Please contact us here if you have any further queries, we will gladly assist you.
Should you wish to have your fire detection system checked we proved a free evaluation service.

Fortunately legislation is ensuring that both National & International Standards have to be adhered too.
